ポートランド州立大学での経験

I studied abroad at Portland State University during the summer vacation of 2023. The 22 days went by so quickly, but this experience was a great one.
I had wanted to study abroad someday since I was a junior high school student. This time was my first experience spent abroad, so I was both excited and anxious about what life would be like. When I started my studies in Portland, there were times when I was worried about the time difference and the unfamiliar English conversation. However, I was able to enjoy my life because I had classes in the morning and conversation classes in the afternoon every day. In class, we sat in a circle and exchanged opinions with each other, and there were activities such as going to a park on the university campus and writing essays. I was able to experience things that I wouldn’t have been able to do just by taking classes in Japan, and it was very stimulating. I enjoyed conversation with native English-speakers in the afternoon conversation class. The native speakers changed every day, so I could enjoy many conversations with a variety of people. What particularly impressed me was when a local native speaker explained Japanese onomatopoeias. I was surprised that an American person knew more about Japanese onomatopoeias than I did – a native Japanese person. I never expected to come to America and learn about Japan from an American. The man who taught me about Japanese onomatopoeia is a university student majoring in Japanese and he speaks Japanese quite fluently. Like with his ambition, I want to be able to speak English more fluently and have conversations with him not only about onomatopoeia, but also about also other things.
I would like to improve my English skills during my school life. Time is limited in university life, so I would like to try various things and make use of them in the future.

私は2023年の夏休みにポートランド州立大学に留学をしました。22日間というあっという間の時間でしたが、この経験はとても良いものとなりました。
　私は、中学生のときからいつか留学をしてみたいと思っていました。私にとって今回が初めての海外での生活だったため、どのような生活が待っているのか楽しみな気持ちと不安な気持ちでいっぱいでした。ポートランドでの研修が始まって、時差や慣れない英語での会話で悩んだ時もありました。しかし、毎日、午前中の授業と午後に行われる会話のクラスがあったため、楽しく生活を送ることができました。授業では、円になって生徒同士が意見交換をしたり、授業中に大学のキャンパス内にある公園に行って作文を書くというアクティビティがあったりしました。日本で授業を受けているだけでは経験できないような体験ができ、良い刺激になりました。午後の会話のクラスでは、ネイティブスピーカーとの会話を楽しみました。ネイティブスピーカーのパートナーが毎日変わるため、いろいろな人と多くの会話を楽しむことができました。私が特に印象に残っているのは、現地のネイティブスピーカーが日本語のオノマトペについて説明をしてくれたことです。アメリカ人が、日本人の私よりも日本語のオノマトペについて詳しく知っていたことにとても驚きました。アメリカに来て、アメリカ人から日本のことを学ぶとは全く思ってもいませんでした。日本語のオノマトペについて教えてくれた男性は、日本語を専攻としている大学生で、とても流暢に日本語を話します。彼が日本語を流暢に話すのと同じように、私ももっと流暢に英語を話し、オノマトペについてのことはもちろん、その他のことについても彼とまた会話をしたいです。
　残りの大学生活で、英語の能力を高めていきたいです。大学生活は時間が限られているので、様々なことに挑戦をして将来に役立てていきたいです。
