A Women’s University that started allowing transgender women students one year ago has received a positive response from the general public.

I gave a presentation in my English class introducing news about this. The main point was that Ochanomizu Women’s University started accepting transgender women from 2020 and have received positive feedback about doing this. The reason I brought up this news is that Japan Women's University will also start accepting transgender women from 2024.

I explained in the presentation that I want to remember my privilege of being the majority. I think students at my university, being female, are the minority in this male-dominated society but are the majority when comparing ourselves to those who identify as transgender. That is, we can be both a minority and a majority depending on perspective. This is natural, but I was surprised when I realized this.

I think that Women’s Universities, including Japan Women's University, have been thinking about how women can build their careers in a male-dominated society and how to help women develop their abilities to do so. However, now it seems that we have to think not only about gender issues, but also about sexuality, race, and many other issues. You may think it is annoying to have to do all this thinking about these issues, but I think it's something we need to do as a majority.

In this way, my little presentation led me to having this big idea.

To my pleasure, I received positive feedback from my classmates and teacher. It was an event that taught me many important things, such as being in the majority and in the minority at the same time.

　私は英語の授業で、このタイトルのニュースについて紹介するプレゼンを行いました。このニュースの要点は、お茶の水女子大学が2020年からトランス女性を受け入れたこと、そしてそのことについて好意的な意見を受け取ったこと、さらにトランス女性の受け入れのために行ったことについてでした。私がこのニュースを紹介した理由は、日本女子大学も2024年からトランス女性の受け入れを開始するということがあったからです。
　私はプレゼンの中で、自身もマジョリティとしての特権を持つ存在であることを忘れたくないと述べました。日本女子大学の学生の大半が、女性として男性社会の中ではマイノリティでありながら、トランス女性、はたまた同性/両性愛者やアセクシャル/ノンセクシャルに対してはマジョリティであると思います。つまり、私たちは必ずしもマジョリティ/マイノリティのどちらかではないのです。当たり前のことですが、これに気づいたとき、私は驚きました。
　今まで日本女子大学も含めて、女子大学というものは、男性社会の中でどのように女性がキャリアを築いていくか、そのための力をどのように育むのかを考えてきたと思います。しかし、これからは女性/男性という問題だけではなく、セクシャリティや人種、さらには階級や貧困の問題についても考えないといけなさそうです。大変「面倒くさい」ですし、私自身もそう思いますが、それは男性が男女平等について「面倒くさい」と思うのと同じことなのでは無いかと思います。
　このように、とある英語のプレゼンから、頭でっかちにもこんな壮大なことにまで考えが及んでしまいました。
　嬉しかったのは、学友や先生がポジティブなフィードバックをくださったことです。たくさんの重要なことを学び、そしてもっと色々なことを学びたいと思わせてくれた出来事でした。
